Stary Sącz is a hub of cycle routes. The VeloDunajec from Zakopane ends here, and the Poprad valley invites you to ride on.
Stary Sącz has always lived by its rivers. At its boundaries the Poprad flows into the Dunajec, and for centuries river crossings were a matter of life for the town. The river could take life away, too. In the flood of 4 June 2010 the Poprad brought down two spans of the iron railway bridge of 1876.
The symbol of new times is St Kinga’s Bridge. This 328.8 m cable-stayed bridge was built in 2006–2008 together with the bypass of provincial road no. 969. It was named after the town’s patron, as if the duchess were still watching over the crossing.
The area is best explored from the saddle of a bicycle. EuroVelo 11, Velo Dunajec, the Carpathian Cycle Route and the Royal Cycle Route all run through Stary Sącz. The VeloDunajec, the route from Zakopane, reached Stary Sącz in 2021. The area around the Stawy and the Bobrowisko is a good starting point for rides along the Poprad, for example towards Barcice.
