Church of the Divine Mercy

A younger church with the image of the Merciful Jesus

Alongside its medieval churches, Stary Sącz also has a modern one. It is alive, still being adorned and close to the everyday life of the townspeople.

Not everything in Stary Sącz is seven centuries old. The Divine Mercy parish belongs to the Diocese of Tarnów. It is one of eight parishes in the diocese with this dedication. Its church is proof that the faith of the townspeople still builds and adorns.

On Sunday 19 December 2021 Bishop Andrzej Jeż blessed the renovated chancel, a new tabernacle and an altar cross here. The furnishings were designed by the Stary Sącz artist Andrzej Pasoń. An image of the Merciful Jesus was placed in the chancel. The tabernacle, the cross and the altar wall were funded by the parishioners. In April 2024 the same bishop dedicated the church – that is, solemnly gave the building over to the exclusive service of God.

In a town where almost every stone remembers the Middle Ages, this church tells a different story: of a parish that adorns its church through its own efforts. It is a stop for those who want to see how the piety of old carries on into today’s. Enter quietly and pause before the image in the chancel. Respect those at prayer.
