The boardwalk in the “Bobrowisko” nature enclave

Bobrowisko

A former gravel pit that nature took back

Wooden boardwalks lead across wetlands and ponds, and two hides let you watch birds and, with luck, beavers.

From 1950 until the 1980s gravel was dug here, among other things for building Nowa Huta. When the machines left, nature claimed its own. The pits became overgrown, beavers moved into the water and birds into the reeds. The enclave lies where the Dunajec and the Poprad meet.

In 2018 the 55Architekci studio laid a wooden boardwalk about 400 m long through the site. It winds between wetlands, ponds and thickets. Along the way there are two geometrically shaped hides with dioramas showing how the place came to be, and engraved panels about the local animals and plants. The project won the Witkiewicz Award. In the first week of June 2019, 1,800 people came here.

Nature does not run to a timetable. One time you will see birds in the reeds, another time the marks of beaver teeth on a trunk or the play of light on the water. Come with binoculars and keep quiet, and the Bobrowisko will surely reward you.
