A short, flat loop where the Dunajec meets the Poprad. It leads from the bathing area to the wooden boardwalks of a former gravel pit that beavers and birds have made their home.
Once upon a time gravel was dug here, among other things for the building of Nowa Huta. When the machines left, nature reclaimed what was hers. The pits became overgrown and filled with water. By the Stawy (ponds) the town’s summer beach grew up, and a few minutes further north a wild enclave that was named the Bobrowisko – the beavers’ place.
A wooden boardwalk some 400 m long winds through the marshes, ponds and thickets. Along the way stand two geometrically shaped hides where you can sit and watch birds and, if luck is on your side, beavers too. Boards tell of the local animals and plants, and dioramas of how this place came to be.
Nature does not keep to a timetable. One time you will see birds in the reeds, another only the marks of beaver teeth on a trunk. So it pays to walk slowly, speak quietly and bring binoculars. Back at the Stawy you can still relax by the water.
