War Cemetery No. 348

A burial plot for soldiers of two world wars

A war plot in the municipal cemetery on ul. Węgierska. Few visitors know this place exists.

The municipal cemetery on ul. Węgierska was opened in 1909 and enlarged in 1917. In 1915, during the First World War, the Austrian architect Gustaw Ludwig designed a plot in it for fallen soldiers. It was given the number 348 in the system of Galician war cemeteries. The war did not pass the town by. In 1914 the building of the teachers’ seminary was occupied in turn by Russian and Austrian troops.

Graves from the Second World War were added later. The number of soldiers buried here has never been established. Many names have been lost, and the memory of these people lives on thanks to those who come here.

This is a quiet and modest place. There is nothing to sightsee here in the usual sense. You can come, read the surviving inscriptions and light a candle. Bear in mind that the plot lies within a working municipal cemetery. Many people visit it, especially around All Saints’ Day.
