The House on the Hollows (Dom na Dołkach) – today the Regional Museum

“House on the Hollows” Regional Museum

The house that survived the great fire of 1795

The only brick house on the market square to escape the fire of 1795. Today it holds a museum about the everyday life of the old town.

When, in April 1795, fire swallowed almost the entire town within a few quarters of an hour, this house survived. Its walls are a metre thick and its floor is laid with river cobbles. Where does its name come from? Some say from the tanners’ pits, others from an old lock-up. Between the wars the Steireich family ran a wine bar here.

Since 1956 the house has kept the collection gathered by the shoemaker Józef Paszkiewicz. Since 1976 it has been home to the Seweryn Udziela Regional Museum. The exhibition tells of crafts and guilds, of the culture of the Sącz Lachs and of everyday household objects. It also shows folk art, wayside shrines and mementoes of distinguished townspeople. You will find an exhibition about the singer Ada Sari and the Fr Józef Tischner Memorial Room.

It is a good place for a rainy day. It is also worth coming here before a walk around town, because after the visit it is easier to understand what you see in the streets.
